What the World Needs Now

Dear Reader,

I often have this vision of myself being a world renowned speaker and author with almost celebrity status. I can see myself signing books and looking up to see my sweet husband smiling at me adoringly, with our daughter pulling at him to buy her a trinket from another booth. I’ve been writing all of my life and have been encouraged by many fans (okay mostly family and dear friends!) to write a book, submit more articles, speak at more events, and yet before I can even get my website up and running to my satisfaction, it seems another person appears in my life in need of support. It could be my children, my husband, my mother, my siblings or a friend who are in need of love, understanding, forgiveness, money, a snack or a place to crash! Sometimes they just need me to witness their frustration and hear their pain. Other times they need another human to physically help them drive to their doctor appointment, reach something on a higher shelf, or literally clean up a mess they got themselves into. Sometimes they need me to pry them away from their work so I can get them fed or refreshed with a forced nature walk or a cuddle! Sometimes they want a different perspective but mostly they want me to understand theirs.

No matter what their issue is, they want and benefit from focused attention. It is a universal NEED in all humans to feel heard and understood. Mostly I’m content to play my role as nurturer but sometimes I feel my projects are put on back burner so long they seem to completely evaporate! Part of me wants to shout, “Can’t you see I’m trying to save the world? Can’t you see I have projects that I’m working on that are VERY important? Can’t you see that I have a mission in life to make a difference and you’re interrupting me?” But thankfully, before I vocalize such thoughts, I take a moment to feel the energy of the person who is asking for my help and I consciously choose to connect with their heart’s desire. Although outwardly, the requests vary, the consistent desire for most requests is that of CONNECTION. We all want to feel we matter, we are heard, we are supported, we are not alone.

I’ve come to understand it is my ego that sees me as a famous writer but it is my spirit that knows my true calling is to be a source of unconditional love to those dear to me. Of course my children are old enough to make their own after school snacks. But as I wash my hands and together we pull out berries and nuts and crackers, the stories of their day begin to pour out and we feel close and reconnected again. When I insist my husband lay his head on my lap for me to massage his scalp before he dashes out to his next work event, tension seems to evaporate and he leaves feeling renewed and glad to be married to me. When relatives come for a visit, I put away my computer and choose to focus on their lives and I ask my higher self, “How can I serve?” because I know intuitively what quantum physics is now confirming: we are all connected and we all do better when we all do better. So if in a small way, I can uplift someone with a meal, a visit or simply my focused attention, I am fulfilling my mission in life. I’m a believer in the lyrics of the famous song, “What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love”. The book I’m writing will need to wait another day. What the world needs now is a hug and I’m going to offer one starting with my baby.
